When to pray seems like a funny title for a Discipleship study, right? I mean, when should we not pray?
I think the point we are meant to take away from these verses gets us back to what we were saying in Sunday's worship service. (For those of you who could concentrate and not think about the NY GIANTS! :)
Luke 22:46--when Jesus was in the garden, he tells Peter and the disciples to pray (something we would expect) and then follows it with the reason why (something we would not necessarily expect)--so that you will not fall into temptation.
Prayer and temptation related? Yep. Prayer is a method of training, but not training our physical bodies, (which is only of some value anyway), but training our Spirits in the ways of Godliness--which has value in all things.) It is possible to so train our habits that we gain victory over temptation in many areas of our lives. In ways we never imagined we can grow in Christian maturity, like a marathon runner going the distance. (Think of young David training on the lion and the bear long before he ever got to Goliath.)
So get up, and pray. After all, our leader Jesus was training in the garden for the fight of his life.
